The Game of Thrones Table

The previous home owner had surprisingly super modern taste for living in a Victorian home. But luckily this gave us a simple blank slate to put our stamp on it. Little by little, on a mission to "put the old" back into our home.

As you know, I gravitate towards crazy over the top crap. But I like my pieces to breathe, so I typically keep the walls quiet with calm, soft colors. Needless to say, the Ninja Turtle green walls weren't my favorite. Here is a pic below of the original kitchen with the modern island.

The existing kitchen island was very nice, but too basic. Luckily we could give it to a friend who helped us load the "Game Of Thrones" table inside! *Remember this killer dragon beast table I got from the auction house?....Hubby actually spotted this stunner. "What about this one?" he says.

Ummmm are you freaking kidding me!? All kinds of YESSSsssssss

Yes Yes Yes
Gimme Gimme greedy hands.

I was on a mission to find a non traditional island. Something that spoke to me. This baby looks like it could fly away. Perfection.

Here she is plopped in the kitchen while we were painting. I already want to cry. Yesssss

So we ran all around town getting quotes on marble for the top. Now I really want to cry. Apparently marble is super awesome and trendy right now because every blogger and Instagram babe is all about it. Which drives the price up, which makes the island top cost anywhere from $800-$1,600. Which shatters all my thrifty magical dreams and puts me into a semi depression for a moment.

Where can I get some killer marble on the cheap?.....Craigslist, of course! Yes.......

So I spend hours, days.....searching for hideous vintage tables with the perfect marble top. A great idea! I'm so proud of myself for being so resourceful and thrifty!......Hours, and days, and weeks. Still nothing. Is there really nothing at all in this world?

So I do what any mystical person who gives up on their dreams would do. I put it into the Universe.

Luckily, being in the antique business, I am surrounded by like minded hoarders who keep stuff for the simple fact that "You might use this some day".

Universe delivers.

My friend Laura saw my Instagram post and said she had a killer slab leaning on the side of her house that she "planned to use some day" but never did. So I snagged it from her for a fraction of the cost of the stone fabricators.

Behold.

Step one was flipping the dragon table upside down and adding some feet to give it proper island height. Thank Gawd I saved these chunky wooden feet for the last 6 years...

The marble was exactly the same size as the table top, and we wanted to have a small lip around the perimeter. Pete unscrewed the top and ripped down the sides to adjust.

I know that some of you are freaking out right about now and probably want to punch me for sawing on this baby. But calm down.

This is a vintage reproduction. You will never catch me hacking up a fine European antique.

We laid some foam drawer liner down after securing the table top. This helps the stone lay evenly and get a grip.

Enter the slab.

It takes three dudes to lift this heavy stone. Or maybe just two and a spectator.....

I had to touch up the sides of the table where it was sawn with a matching stain. This probably should have been done before the marble was placed, but who cares.

Behold!
Are you freaking out inside like I am!?...
I'm pretty sure that everything I cook is going to be awesome now. Food is just going to taste better when prepared on the dragon table!
